Historical Context:Up for sale is a highly rare and beautifully preserved World War II-era Canadian military souvenir doll. This piece was manufactured by the renowned Reliable Toy Company of Toronto, Canada, circa 1939 to 1945. These dolls were highly popular wartime Homefront keepsakes and sweetheart gifts sent home by service members during the war.
Canadian-specific military composition dolls from the 1940s are significantly scarcer than standard American WWII souvenir dolls, as they were produced in much smaller factory batches."Comparable composition dolls from this rare Canadian series have tracked in the $375+$400 range in antiquarian markets.
There has not been a example of this particular doll selling in the U.S. for the last 12 years.One example did sell in Canada and hammered at $400.00 U.S., ten years ago.
Item Construction & Details:
- Head: Molded composition head with painted facial features and molded hair.
- Body: Soft, firmly stuffed cloth torso with dark canvas or cotton stitched feet. Hands are molded in the original factory mitten style.
- Uniform: Features its original, factory-fitted blue chambray/denim military jumpsuit with matching garrison cap. The uniform showcases original factory topstitching down the center seam and along the cuffs.
- Key Markings: The garrison cap features original, crisp yellow embroidered text reading "CANADA" inside a maple leaf outline. An original factory union label/tag is stitched inside the rear neckline beneath the shirt collar, remaining unaltered and untouched.
- Composition: The facial paint remains bright, clear, and vibrant. The molded composition hair shows typical paint flaking, chipping, and minor surface wear along the upper ridge, which is expected for composition pieces of this era. Hands and fingers are completely intact.
- Fabric & Hardware: The jumpsuit fabric is clean with very minor age-spotting near the center waist seam. The original metal belt buckle shows expected vintage oxidation.
- Note: The tiny rear waistband snap is missing/separated. The waistband is currently held together securely by a vintage straight pin as a period-correct, authentic fix.
