Vintage Echt Edelweiss Glass Ashtray Real Dried Flowers Ice Axe Alpine Souvenir
Description
Vintage Alpine souvenir ashtray in heavy pressed glass, with two real dried edelweiss flowers and a miniature ice axe set under a clear glass dome on a black ground, finished with the green and gold foil “Echt Edelweiss” (genuine edelweiss) seal. The edelweiss-and-ice-axe motif is the classic mountaineering emblem of the mid-century Alps, and pieces like this were sold in tourist shops across Austria, Bavaria and Switzerland from the 1950s to the 1970s. Twelve-sided with four cigarette rests, equally at home as a trinket dish, ring dish or desk paperweight.
Edelweiss is now a protected plant in Austria, Switzerland and Germany, so souvenirs containing real flowers are no longer made this way — this is a genuine piece of old Alpine tourism.
Approx 11cm across, 10cm base, 3.5cm high, 273g. Unmarked as to maker, which is normal for these.
