This embroidered patch is for the 15th Field Artillery Observation Battalion of the United States Army in World War II.
Field artillery observation battalions found enemy guns for the counterbattery fight, using sound ranging, flash ranging and survey teams that worked out ahead of the infantry. The battalion's own wartime history covers its service from 1942 to 1945. Its motto, VIGILANCE AND ENERGY, is stitched on the lower scroll.
The red and blue shield, split by a white zigzag, shows a gold field gun with white smoke and a bursting shell. It measures 3 by 3.5 inches with a cut edge and sew-on backing.
Frame it with a father's or grandfather's wartime photos, or give it to a family keeping his service history.
