18th C Central European 3 Train 2 Bell Wall Clock Engraved Dial c.1770-1810:
$2495.00

Offered is a very unusual early weight-driven wall clock, believed to be Central European—possibly South German, Austrian, or Bohemian—and dating approximately to thelate 18th or early 19th century.

The clock has a wonderfulhand-painted iron dialdepicting buildings in a mountainous landscape, surrounded by hand-painted fruit and foliage. The dial incorporates a separateengraved silvered-metal chapter ringwith Roman numerals, Arabic minute markings, minute divisions, and engraved decorative motifs.

It retains attractive early brass hands, including a particularly elaboratepierced and shaped hour hand.

Behind the dial is a substantialall-metal three-train, cord-driven movementwith iron/steel framing and brass wheelwork. One train operates the timekeeping/pendulum mechanism, while the other two are separate striking trains operatingtwo bells. Two large externalcount wheelsare visible on the back of the movement.

This is considerably more mechanically sophisticated than the typical two-train time-and-strike wall clock.

The clock originally operated with a heavier driving weight and lighter counterweight on each of its three cords. The smaller counterweights shown are included, but thethree main driving weights are missing.

Because the proper driving weights are not present, I have not been able to run the clock continuously under normal operating conditions. However, when downward tension is applied manually to the three cords, the time train operates and moves the pendulum arm, and both striking trains operate their respective bell mechanisms.

I have not confirmed the exact original striking sequence, so I am not representing the clock specifically as a quarter-striking or grande-sonnerie clock.

The clock is being sold inunrestored antique condition. It shows expected age-related wear, oxidation, paint loss, surface corrosion, dust, scratches, and discoloration. The movement has not been polished or aggressively cleaned.

It should be inspected, properly weighted, serviced, adjusted, and installed by someone familiar with early European weight-driven clocks before regular operation.

Please examine all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the description.

A particularly interesting early European wall clock combining a painted architectural dial, engraved silvered chapter ring, decorative brass hands, and an unusualthree-train, two-bell metal striking movement.
