Authentic, original 1900 large-format fold-out map of the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company (BRT) showing its Surface and Elevated Lines and Franchises. This map was published exclusively as a premium centerfold insert for the Street Railway Section of the prestigious Wall Street serial, The Commercial & Financial Chronicle.
This piece documents a legendary era in New York City history. Printed just two years after the 1898 consolidation of Greater New York - and prior to the opening of the city's first underground subway lines - it captures the BRT at the absolute peak of its aggressive expansion as it consolidated independent trolley lines and old southern Brooklyn steam routes into a singular transit empire. It features incredible geographic, street-level detail spanning across Brooklyn and deep into Queens.
Condition Report: Beautiful Condition
This 126-year old map has been exceptionally well-preserved and is in far better condition than standard financial newsprint survivors of this size:
• Folds & Intersections: The factory folds are tight, structurally sound, and clean. The multi-directional cross-fold intersections are fully intact without the deep tears or structural splits typical for this fragile paper.
• Paper Quality: Clean and crisp; free from water stains, foxing, or brittle edge chipping.
• Margins: Excellent, wide borders all around the neatline, making it an ideal candidate for professional matting and high-end framing.
• Verso (Reverse): The reverse side is completely blank. This is a massive plus for framing, as there is no heavy text on the back to bleed through or shadow the front map image under glass.
