Original October 4, 1942 WWII Raybestos-Manhattan Service Flag & Treasury Minute Man Flag Program – Manheim, Pennsylvania

Scarce original World War II home-front booklet issued for the United States Asbestos Division of Raybestos-Manhattan, Inc. in Manheim, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

The booklet documents the ceremony held Sunday, October 4, 1942, for the “Dedication of Service Flag” and Presentation of Treasury Department Minute Man Flag.

The illustrated cover features the Manheim plant, American flags, Treasury Minute Man flag and a large Service Flag displaying 180, representing the company's employees serving in the Armed Forces.

The booklet contains photographs and addresses by company officials, including George R. Weber, General Manager; O. H. Cilley, Assistant General Manager; and B. W. Luttenberger, Factory Manager, as well as the presentation and acceptance of the Service Flag by Mrs. Irvin Barto.

Of particular historical interest, the welcome address describes United States Asbestos Division employees producing materials used in the construction of tanks, motor-transport trucks, Navy boats and airplanes for the American war effort.

The ceremony also marked the plant's qualification for the U.S. Treasury Department Minute Man Flag, recognizing extraordinary employee participation in the War Bond payroll savings program. The Treasury tightened the qualification standard effective August 15, 1942, to represent 90% employee participation and 10% of gross payroll invested in War Bonds—less than two months before this ceremony. FRASER

The Service Flag presentation is especially poignant. The company presented a flag with a blue star honoring its employees in military service and expressed the hope that it would never be necessary to add a gold star.
