1966 BATMAN & ROBIN LUNCH BOX AND THERMOS — The thermos survived, which is the rare part.Lunch boxes get saved. Thermoses get dropped. The glass vacuum liner inside one of these is about as thick as a Christmas ornament, and a single hard set-down on a cafeteria table finished most of them within a few years of purchase. Shake almost any 1966 Batman thermos you find today and you'll hear the answer. This one is silent. The liner is intact and unbroken, photographed from above through the neck so you can see the mirrored glass for yourself, and it still has its Lox-On No. 30 stopper and the correct original black cup.The television series premiered in January 1966 and ran twice a week — an aggressive scheduling decision that turned a thirty-year-old comic book character into a national event inside of a month. By that fall Aladdin Industries of Nashville had this kit in stores, and for two school years it was a form of currency. What has aged well is that Aladdin's illustrator ignored the show. No Adam West, no photographic likeness, no camp. The Batman on the front panel is the comic-book Batman, swinging in on a line and connecting with a hood beside the Batmobile while Robin comes up behind him. The back panel is a rescue: Robin carrying a child out of a burning building, Batman reaching in for them both. Collectors generally attribute the Aladdin superhero boxes of this period to the company's longtime art director Elmer Lehnhardt, though the attribution rests on collector research rather than a signed credit. The construction deserves its own mention. The main panels are deep-relief embossed, so the figures stand off the steel and you can feel them under your thumb. The rim carries a continuous story around all four sides: the Batcave laboratory, the Batmobile, the Hot-Line, the Joker and the Riddler roped together mid-escape, and the Penguin working a lever while Robin slides toward a furnace. Rotate the thermos and you get a second scene entirely — the Riddler scrambling across a tar-slicked street, the Joker upending the bucket that made the mess, the Penguin with his umbrella drawn like a sabre, Gotham police closing in from a skyline background. Now the honest part, because it affects what this is worth and you should hear it from me rather than find it in the photographs. The box's carrying handle is gone, along with the brackets that held it — the four mounting slots are still there in the front panel, empty. The wire retainer that holds the thermos in the lid is also gone. In collector terms this is not a complete kit — the thermos is complete, the box is not. Beyond that the box was simply carried to school: heavy fine scratching across the lid, rims worn through to bare metal with surface rust, rust at the interior hinge. No dents, no punctures, no restoration of any kind, and the embossed art is complete with the color still strong. Both pieces have been left exactly as found. Rust removal takes the lithography off tin with it, so as-found is the only defensible thing to do with an object like this.Aladdin Industries, 1966 · Embossed steel box · Thermos complete with intact glass liner, Lox-On stopper and original cup · Batcave wraparound rim panels · Joker, Riddler & Penguin · National Periodical Publications · Box handle and thermos retainer wire not presentDouble-boxed with honeycomb kraft void fill, fully insured, and shipped within one business day of cleared payment.Offered by The Memory Shop of Concord — curated books and cultural artifacts for serious collectors at memoryshopconcord.com Related Items:
