4 LIFE WWII Naval Stories Bismarck Zamzam Ship Sinkings Rescues Survivors:
$12.99
This listing is a fascinating collection of four original LIFE Magazine stories from the World War II era, centered on ships lost to enemy action and the extraordinary experiences of the sailors, servicemen and civilians who survived at sea.
The collection includes stories dealing with both ship sinkings and dramatic rescues/survival at sea, giving a contemporary LIFE Magazine view of the war as readers experienced it at the time.
Highlights include:
- The Sinking of the “Zamzam” — LIFE's account of the Egyptian passenger ship Zamzam, which was attacked and sunk by the German raider Atlantis in 1941. The story includes remarkable photographs connected with the sinking and the passengers caught up in the attack.
- The Bismarck — A dramatic illustrated account of the pursuit and destruction of Germany's famous battleship Bismarck, one of the best-known naval episodes of World War II.
- The “Bismarck's” End — A firsthand account by Royal Navy Lt. Commander Geoffrey Carver, describing the action aboard HMS Dorsetshire and the firing of the torpedoes during the final destruction of the Bismarck.
- WWII Survival and Rescue at Sea — The collection also includes dramatic material about men stranded at sea, facing thirst, blazing sun, sharks and the uncertainty of rescue. One particularly moving passage describes the survivors turning to prayer as their situation became increasingly desperate.
Together, these original LIFE pages tell both sides of wartime disaster at sea — the violence of naval warfare and ship sinkings, followed by the human stories of survival, courage and rescue.
An excellent grouping for collectors of World War II memorabilia, naval history, Royal Navy history, the Bismarck, maritime disasters, shipwrecks, military history, or original LIFE Magazine material.
These are original period LIFE Magazine pages — not modern reproductions or reprints.
The photographs shown are of the actual material included in the lot.
A PERSONAL NOTE:These LIFE magazines were saved by my father, a World War II veteran who roseto the rank of First Sergeant. He entered the U.S. Army on June 27, 1942, inPittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and served with Company G, 13th QuartermasterRegiment (Battalion), and the 1744th Ordnance Group. His wartime service tookhim to North Africa and southern Italy before he returned home and wasdischarged in 1945.
More than 80 yearslater, I am offering all articles and advertisements from the LIFEmagazines he preserved. In his memory and in recognition of those who served, proceeds from these sales will be donated to Fisher House Foundation, whichprovides support and lodging for military and veteran families while theirloved ones receive medical care.
