8 Pc Set of Antique Hand Forged Number Branding Irons for Cattle or Sheep HornsOr possibly US Civil War c. 1860-1865 Hoof Branding Iron SetAuthentic 8 piece set of antique hand forged branding irons… includes the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. The 6 is also the number 9, which are interchangeable. Numbers are stamped on the handles as well. Some research suggests the following:They could be US Cavalry Civil War, circa 1860-1865, hoof branding iron set. This set consists of eight separate irons with these numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6/9, 7, and 8. During the Civil War, more than 7 million horse and mules were in service. It became necessary to have a system for identification of each animal to be established, so that records could be maintained. Officers would also sell their horses, so it became custom for the officer to have to bring the horse's foot back to prove that it was incapable of further service. This set of irons has what I believe to be copper iron and steel handle.Other research suggests that historically numbered branding irons have been used for decades to identify and track livestock, mark ownership and ranch brands, to indicate animal attributes such as age and pregnancy. They were also used for general property marking on items like wood, leather, and/or furniture. Each measure approximately 22” longThese irons have been well-preserved, and show signs of authentic age appropriate use, with wonderful and untouched antique patina.Exciting addition to a Western Americana or ranching/farming collection… perfect size for display… or can be used for custom projects such as branding personalized wooden items or even steaks! Please note that the pictures are considered to be a major part of the description, and ensure that you are comfortable with the research or knowledge that you have done, or have pertaining to these irons.
