This sale is for what appears to be an antique Victorian embossed gilt brass compact case, powder box, or patch/snuff box featuring a hinged lid with a interior mirror and a gathered silk or swansdown powder puff with a small bone or celluloid ring handle. The outside lid features a cast emblem of an eagle with spread wings, a central shield/crest, and an ornate floral or scrollwork border.
It is in good pre-owned antique condition. Please see all pictures.
Key Features Observed:
• Case: Round gilded or silver/brass metal housing with an ornate embossed floral, scroll, and acanthus leaf pattern.
It measures approximately 1 5/8" across and stands 5/8" tall.
• Interior: Contains a gathered fabric/swansdown puff with a small ring handle (often bone, ivory, or celluloid) sitting inside the base.
• Era: Typically dating from the late 19th to early 20th century (Victorian to Edwardian period, circa 1880s–1920s), sometimes worn suspended from a chatelaine.
The Design: The outer casing features extensive etched floral scrollwork. The distinct central relief emblem shows two outstretched wings framing a eagle, a crest, or a classic motif representing victory, freedom, or enlightenment, popular in early 20th-century decorative arts.
