Title: Antique Late Victorian Large 10" x 12" Mounted Studio Photograph – Incredible Multi-Generational Family Group Portrait (11 Individuals) – Circa 1890s Heritage Ephemera
Description:Up for sale is a magnificent, original large-format late 19th-century Victorian family group portrait. Mounted on its original, heavy slate-gray cardboard display board measuring a substantial 10x12 inches, this photograph features an impressive gathering of 11 family members, likely spanning three generations.
Unmarked by a specific studio stamp, the styling, backdrop, and clear composition hint at a high-quality regional photographer or traveling studio specializing in large homestead portraits. It is a fantastic piece for collectors of social history, Victorian fashion, or authentic period home decor.
Key Features & Collector Points:
Imposing Visual Presence: The 10" x 12" dimensions make this significantly larger than standard cabinet cards of the era, designed originally for framing or prominent parlor display.
Fascinating Fashion & Cultural Details: The patriarch sits front and center sporting a classic, full Victorian chin-beard (Lincoln style), alongside the matriarch in a dark pleated gown. Surrounding them are five young men in formal sack suits, vests, and high collars, and four girls/young women showcasing tiered patterned dresses, intricate high-necked bodices, and period footwear.
Ornate Studio Backdrop: The family is arranged against an elaborate, painted Victorian studio backdrop featuring classical columns, floral motifs, and sweeping drapery, over a patterned studio rug floor.
Overall Card Mount: 10" x 12"
Inner Photograph Image: Approximately 5" x 7.75"
📸 Buyer Note on Condition: Finding large-format multi-figure family mounts completely intact without heavy center cracks or trimming is uncommon. Please carefully review all high-resolution listing photos—including the edge details of the gray mat board—to assess its exact antique condition before offerding or purchasing.
Condition Report:
Photograph: The central print is in very good antique condition, showing deep, warm sepia tones, strong contrast, and remarkable facial clarity across all eleven subjects. There is extremely minor surface silvering/age-toning to the extreme edges of the photo print, but no major scratches or tears.
Cardboard Mount: The heavy slate-gray mat board is strong and flat. It shows typical honest age wear, including light corner bumping, minor edge rubbing, and a small, faint age mark or blemish on the lower reverse side.
