The Jennie Cramer Case:
On August 6, 1881, a fisherman found the body of 20-year-old Jennie Cramer floating off the West Haven, Connecticut shoreline. She was the daughter of a German immigrant cigar maker and was well-known in New Haven for her beauty.
The Death: An autopsy revealed that Cramer had not drowned—hardly any water was found in her lungs—and there was evidence that she had been raped within 48 hours of her death. Analysis showed that Cramer had ingested a fatal dose of over three grains of arsenic hours before her death.
The Suspects: James Malley Jr., nephew of wealthy dry goods store owner Edward Malley, had been one of Cramer’s persistent admirers. He and his cousin Walter Malley had been socializing with Cramer and a woman named Blanche Douglass, who was a New York prostitute, not the respectable woman she initially claimed to be. The inquest autopsy revealed evidence of rape, and detectives arrested all three suspects.
The Trial: The case went to trial on April 25, 1882, with charges consolidated into first-degree murder. The prosecution presented numerous witnesses who testified that the defendants’ accounts of their whereabouts conflicted with the evidence. However, after a three-month trial, the accused were acquitted, with many townspeople suspecting that the wealthy Malleys had paid off the jury.
The Aftermath: The case devastated Jennie’s family. Her father killed himself before the trial ended, and her mother, who became mentally unstable after the trial, committed suicide in 1891.
