Antique Chinese Hand-Carved Soapstone Floral Vase / Scholar's Brush Pot - 9":
$450.00
A captivating example of traditional Chinese-inspired stone-carving artistry, this substantial 9-inch soapstone vessel combines remarkable botanical detailing, sculptural openwork, and richly variegated natural stone into an exceptional decorative object.
Beautifully executed with an elaborate arrangement of flowering branches, finely detailed leaves, blossoms, and buds, this distinctive carving displays the craftsmanship and visual richness associated with traditional Chinese scholar's objects and ornamental stone vessels.
Possibly dating to the late Qing dynasty or early Republic period, circa 1880–1930, although its precise age and origin have not been authenticated.
Intricate Botanical CarvingThe beautifully composed front features deeply carved floral ornamentation, including chrysanthemum-like blossoms, delicately veined leaves, emerging buds, and intertwining stems.
Areas of pierced openwork create extraordinary depth and dimension, allowing light and shadow to move through the intricate botanical arrangement.
The floral decoration appears to reference traditional Chinese botanical symbolism, particularly the chrysanthemum, a flower historically associated with longevity, resilience, and scholarly refinement.
Beautiful Natural Stone ColorationOne of the most appealing characteristics of this piece is its dramatic coloration.
Warm tones of golden honey, ochre, reddish brown, cream, and deep russet blend naturally throughout the stone, creating a beautifully mottled appearance.
The reverse showcases broad expanses of polished stone, highlighting the striking natural color variations and contrasting with the elaborate decoration on the front.
Hollow Vessel ConstructionUnlike a solid decorative sculpture, this piece features a deep, elongated oval opening at the top, with a hollowed interior displaying visible working marks.
Its form suggests use as an ornamental vase or possibly a scholar's brush pot, although the original intended purpose remains uncertain.
The vessel is accompanied by a separate circular wooden display stand that complements its warm coloration and provides an attractive presentation.
