Antique French Tea Tin À La Porte Chinoise Paris 1890s Lithograph Box Le Puy:
$72.19
For sale is a highly collectible, authentic late 19th to early 20th-century French lithographed metal tea caddy (boîte à thé). This historic piece was custom-made for the famous luxury Parisian boutique "À la Porte Chinoise", originally located at 36, Rue Vivienne, Paris (founded in 1826). The boutique was world-renowned as a premier importer of fine Asian goods and served as a major epicenter for the Japonisme and Chinoiserie movements in Europe.Design & FeaturesThe tin features beautiful, wrap-around color lithography detailing a step-by-step narrative of the tea trade, complete with period French inscriptions:
- Side 1 (Expédition): A Japanese woman in a traditional kimono overlooking a coastal pier with a masted sailing ship.
- Side 2 (À la Porte Chinoise / Dégustation de Thé): A tea-tasting scene inside the Rue Vivienne storefront boutique.
- Side 3 (Importation Directe / Récolte du Thé): A garden harvest scene showcasing the shop's direct import from China.
- Side 4 (Emballeuse de Thé): Workers packaging and bundling the finished tea boxes.
- Lid: Features the company's registered trademark (Marque Déposée) centered around an illustration of a Chinese pagoda gateway, surrounded by white blossom branches.
- Interior: Retains its original paper anti-counterfeit liner reading "Exiger notre marque et refuser toute boîte non plombée".
- Exterior: The lithographed artwork remains bright and highly detailed with excellent color preservation. There is minor paint loss, surface scratching, and expected edge wear consistent with a 120+ year old antique.
- Interior: Shows moderate to heavy active rust oxidation along the bottom floor and internal seams. The original paper warning liner is present but aged.
- Base: Shows significant surface rust and features an old handwritten provenance paper tag reading "Le Puy, France". There is a minor, typical indentation/dent along the bottom rolled metal rim edge as well as on the edge of the lid.
