A very early Indian iron screw-type padlock, likely 18th–19th century, with a heavy forged construction and a separate rotary key. The form is strongly associated with “vault” or “ballistic” security locks used on strongboxes, treasury chests, temple storage, caravan boxes, and fortified doors in princely India.
A few notable characteristics visible here:
- Thick hand-forged iron body with layered forge marks
- Primitive circular shackle opening integrated into the body
- Screw/rotary locking mechanism rather than modern spring-hasp action
- Openwork iron key with tri-lobed bow design
- Deep natural oxidation and untouched surface patina
- Compact but extremely heavy-duty construction
These locks were designed for brute-force resistance — many were intentionally overbuilt to resist hammering, chiseling, and tampering.
The shape also resembles regional North Indian and Rajasthan/Gujarat strongbox locks. Similar mechanisms were used in:
