Antique Korean Blue & White Porcelain Dragon Jar Vase Joseon Style 5.5”:
$900.00

This antique Korean blue and white porcelain dragon jar vase in Joseon style is a handmade piece that showcases traditional Chinese culture. With a country of origin in China, this 5.5” vase features intricate dragon motifs and designs typical of Chinese ceramics.

This piece is a classic Korean Joseon-style blue-and-white porcelain dragon jar (often referred to as a Yongjun or dragon vase).

At 5.5” high by 4” wide, it is a compact, vernacular variation of the traditional Joseon ceramic forms.

Form & Features

Type & Motif: It features an underglaze cobalt-blue motif of a mythical four-clawed dragon slithering amongst stylized clouds and flames across the vessel's shoulders and body.

Shape: A high, rounded shoulder tapering down toward a narrow, unglazed foot ring, with a short neck terminating in a rolled rim—a signature form for late Joseon-era storage and display jars.

Glaze & Firing: The vessel exhibits a soft milky/bluish-white porcelain glaze with characteristic kiln grit and clay texture visible on the flat, recessed base. The expressive, slightly rustic line work in the cobalt painting is typical of traditional Korean folk and domestic ceramic traditions.

Historical Context

In traditional Korean culture, blue-and-white dragon jars held deep ceremonial and symbolic significance:

Symbolism: Dragons represented strength, protection, and auspicious fortune, as well as control over water and rain.

Usage: While grand dragon jars (often over 12–18 inches with five claws) were crafted by official court painters for royal ceremonies and wine or flower displays, smaller and folk-painted jars were favored in wealthy regional households, scholar studies, or used as functional floral/apothecary containers.

Its craftsmanship and historical significance make it a valuable collectible item for those interested in Asian cultures and ethnicities.
