This exceptional dollhouse sized textile piece is anantique miniature needlework alphabet samplercrafted during themid-19th century, dating approximately from the1830s to 1850s.The sampler features a complete alphabet in uppercase block lettering across the top half, followed by numbers 1 through 5. The bottom half transitions to a complete lowercase alphabet, concluding with numbers 6 through 10. The rows are meticulously divided by geometric cross-stitch border lines, all framed within a matching outer border.It is worked in tiny, highly precise cross-stitches on an exceptionally fine-weave natural linen backing using a monochrome red/faded pink silk or cotton embroidery floss. The reverse view showcases masterfully neat tension, hand-tied knots, and a perfectly turned hem edge. At the bottom center, underneath the lowercase lettering, the tiny stitched initials"LS"serve as the young maker's signature mark.Measuring approximately3 inches by 3 inches, this is a true miniature sampler. While young girls made standard samplers for schoolwork, ultra-miniature examples of this size were often made as practice pieces, salesman samples, or custom decorations to be framed inside large, high-end dollhouse parlors.
