The Frame: 1910s–1920s Arts & Crafts Influenced- The Style: The continuous, repeating pattern of stylized grapevines, clusters, and maple/grape leaves set against a stippled ground is a classic regional variant of the late Art Nouveau or Germanic Jugendstil movement, which remained highly popular in Sweden into the late 1910s and 1920s.
- The Gilding & Overpaint:Gold finish is possible overpaint. There is a silver layer beneath which suggests the gilder used silver leaf with a yellow-tinted lacquer (gold size) over it—an extremely popular method in Scandinavia to mimic expensive solid gold leaf on a budget. Over time, the silver oxidizes to a dull grey or black, which likely prompted the previous owner to cover it with spray paint.
- I did a small test on the frame. The modern finish can be removed professionally with cotton swabs and acetone. Underneath there is a nice silver gilding.
