Antique St. Paul Boy & Dog Photo — Harry Shepherd Studio c.1890s RPPC:

A terrific antique St. Paul, Minnesota portrait of a young boy with his beautiful dog, photographed by Harry Shepherd, a prominent and award-winning St. Paul photographer.

Shepherd was the first African American in Minnesota to own a photographic studio, and his work attracted both Black and white clientele. He won gold medals at the Minnesota State Fair in 1891 and 1892, and his photographs are now held by institutions including the Minnesota Historical Society.

The reverse is mostly blank except for a handwritten name, “Wilmatt Johnson.” Whether or not the sitter can ever be identified, it's a wonderful period detail.

Original antique photograph with terrific subject matter, strong St. Paul provenance, and a particularly charming dog. Some age wear and surface marks consistent with its age.
