[“RED NUMBER” APOLLO 17 MOONSCAPE · SHOT BY COMMANDER GENE CERNAN AT VAN SERG CRATER] NASA / CERNAN, Eugene A. (1934 – 2017), last man to walk on the Moon • mission AS17-146-22443
An original vintage 10 × 8-inch chromogenic print on fibre-based A KODAK PAPER, bearing the coveted red NASA catalogue number AS17-146-22443 in the upper margin. The image was taken at Station 9, Van Serg Crater, Taurus-Littrow Valley, during the final EVA of Apollo 17(13 December 1972). It presents an arresting, almost abstract sweep of lunar regolith with the Sculptured Hills and East Massif rising on the horizon – one of the last photographs ever made by humankind on the Moon.

- Process&stock: Chromogenic colour print, fibre-based, A KODAK PAPER watermark verso.
- Dimensions: 25.5 × 20.3 cm (10 × 8 in), including white margins.
- Identification: Red caption “NASA AS17-146-22443” in top margin; black index cross-hairs visible across the frame.

Historical note:
The third Apollo 17 EVA began 5 : 25 pm EST; by Station 9 Cernan and Harrison Schmitt had logged over twenty miles in their Lunar Rover. On the rim of Van Serg Crater Cernan paused, panned his Hasselblad and captured this stark ultra-wide view – a field of bright talus under an inky sky, the Sun high behind, lens flare forming an ethereal halo. Minutes later, after 7 hours 15 minutes on the surface, Cernan delivered his immortal closing words:
“…As I take man’s last step from the surface, back home for some time to come…America’s challenge of today has forged man’s destiny of tomorrow…
We leave as we came, and, God willing, as we shall return, with peace and hope for all mankind.”
— Gene Cernan, 14 Dec 1972
Red-numbered Apollo photographs were produced in very limited quantities for in-house NASA distribution and VIP presentations; they remain the gold-standard of lunar photography collecting. A key image from the final manned lunar mission, conveying the vast emptiness that surrounded the last human explorers on another world.
