The Spring Valley Diplomatic Archive: A Genealogical Crossroads of DC History
Offered here is an extraordinary, museum-grade piece of 20th-century political history recovered entirely from a single elite estate in the Spring Valley neighborhood of Washington, D.C. (just off Massachusetts Avenue near the National Cathedral).
This archive represents the combined, cross-partisan family lineage of two massive political dynasties: prominent Republican administration advisor Richard "Dick" Herman and legendary Clinton-era Democratic figure George Bristol.
The Provenance and Chain of Custody:
The unbroken history of this box is completely verifiable. Great-grandfather Richard "Dick" Herman’s daughter, Catherine Herman Bates, passed his personal White House mementos down to her son, John Bates. John Bates married Wall Street executive Karen (Shelius) Bates, whose family line connects directly to George Bristol. Their son, Christopher Bates, attended the elite St. Albans School on Massachusetts Ave before moving on to play soccer at Wesleyan University.
As an experienced autograph collector with over 500 live book signings under my belt, I have personally verified the number lines, bindings, and signatures. These items were not signed in a routine public line; they were personal, peer-to-peer gifts exchanged within the highest echelon of American political power.
Premium Archival Preservation & Condition:
Every single volume in this archive is in exceptional, Fine to Near Fine condition. The text blocks are tight, the boards are crisp, and the dust jackets have been meticulously preserved. To guarantee their long-term museum value, a professional Brodart archival-quality Mylar dust jacket protector has been custom-fitted onto every single book. They present beautifully with a brilliant, protected sheen, completely shielded from wear, dust, or handling.
What is Included in this Archive Portfolio:
1. Richard Nixon - "In the Arena" (First Edition, 1990)
The Anchor Piece: Hand-certified via a spectacular, intimate personal inscription. Rather than his standard formal signature, Nixon hand-wrote: "To Dick Herman - With warm regards from Dick Nixon." The casual "Dick Nixon" signature was reserved exclusively for his trusted inner political circle and close friends.
2. James A. Baker III - "The Politics of Diplomacy" (First Edition, 1995) - THE UNICORN
The Rarity: A spectacular, undeniable double-dated, double-signed volume. Secretary Baker first signed and dated the book to his close friend Dick Herman on 10/12/95. Years later, he signed the title page a second time, dating it 2/22/01. Both signatures are 100% authentic, clear as day, and the ink flow speaks entirely for itself.
The Story Behind It: Because these books were recovered untouched from deep inside basement boxes, this double signature stands as a phenomenal piece of history. The 2001 date strongly suggests a poignant, personal backstory: during Richard Herman's final months of life, his longtime friend James Baker likely came to visit his bedside, noticed his own book on the shelf, and signed it a second time to mark that final meeting. It is a spectacular, unique quirk that you simply cannot make up.
3. "It Takes One to Tango" by Edward Rowny (First Edition, Signed "Dutch Reagan", Dated 12-21-92)
The Holy Grail: Inscribed: "Dick, I hope you enjoy this as much as I did. / Dutch Reagan."
CRITICAL AUTOGRAPH NOTE & VETTING PROCESS:
Please note that while the Richard Nixon autograph has been personally verified and authenticated by myself (matching perfectly against established, verified examples of Nixon’s handwriting online), the Ronald Reagan signature stands on a different footing. All circumstantial and social clues heavily point to this being a genuine "Dutch" Reagan signature—especially given the elite Spring Valley estate provenance and the fact that an average gift-giver would never sign with a world-famous last name to a close friend.
However, this Reagan signature is not formally authenticated. During my research, I could not find a comparable online example of Reagan's private handwriting from his late 80s or declining years to stack against this specific piece; therefore, none of the healthy-era Reagan signatures available online look similar to the sharper, more angular lettering found here. It is sold strictly uncertified and raw, with the lot's overall price heavily discounted to reflect this lack of formal authentication. Buyers are encouraged to look closely at the high-resolution photos and evaluate the pen strokes for themselves.
4. James A. Baker III - "Work Hard, Study... and Keep Out of Politics!" (First Edition)
Hand-inscribed and signed by Secretary Baker directly to the family portfolio.
Condition Note: The book and its text block are in pristine, perfect condition with crisp pages. The original dust jacket is bright and sharp under its premium Brodart Mylar protector, noting only a small, light vintage pen marking written directly along the top front edge of the paper jacket (left completely unaltered and as-found to preserve the estate history)- please see photos.
5. George Bristol - "Politics and Parks" (First Edition)
Inscribed directly by the Clinton-appointed National Park Foundation icon to his family members ("John and Karen"), anchoring the exact family line of the estate.
6. Ed R. Haggar - "Big Ed: The Haggar Family & Haggar Corporation" (First Edition)
The Texas Clothing Empire Connection: A brilliant corporate history volume hand-inscribed in block letters by the legendary clothing tycoon himself: "MY VERY BEST TO GOOD FRIEND DICK HERMAN. 1-28-00". This piece perfectly underscores the late-era timeline of the archive, showing how Herman's national network of powerful friends kept in close touch, sending personal mementos directly to his collection right up through 2000 and 2001.
7. Official Richard Nixon Foundation Presidential Tumbler Glass
Recovered directly from the estate study alongside the archive portfolio.
Condition & Terms:
All volumes are crisp, unclipped First Editions with clean text blocks and excellent shelf presentation, fully protected in premium Brodart Mylar. Due to time and resources, the lot is being kept together and sold raw/as-is as a single collection, with the price significantly discounted to account for future TPA (PSA/JSA) slabbing by the new owner.
Ships fully insured with signature tracking. Offers welcome from serious presidential manuscript collectors.
