“One Pair Gilt Epaulettes”
Canfield was a prominent Baltimore dealer in military goods during the Civil War era.
The pair appears to be in very good original condition considering its approximately 160-year age. The gilt bullion fringe remains remarkably complete, and both epaulettes retain their original fabric and construction. Please examine all photographs closely for condition.
Of particular interest, “Albert Stephens” is written in period-appearing ink on the underside/backing of one of the epaulettes. I have not conclusively identified Albert Stephens or established his military service, so these are being offered without a specific attribution to a Union or Confederate officer. Further research may be warranted.
Provenance
The epaulettes were discovered together in their original box in the attic of an older home in Hamilton, Loudoun County, Virginia. The house is believed to have previously been associated with the Tibbs family.
The epaulettes, original box, original Canfield label, and named backing have remained together and are being sold as one set.
The box shows expected age-related wear, including edge/corner wear and deterioration consistent with its age, while the large original paper Canfield label remains exceptionally legible. The epaulettes themselves display age-related wear, oxidation/tarnishing, discoloration and other evidence of age. They have not been cleaned or polished.
An appealing surviving piece of 19th-century American military history, particularly desirable for the original labeled Canfield box and the period-appearing named association.
Please note: I am describing these as Civil War era / 1860s based upon their construction and Canfield military-goods packaging. I have not independently authenticated them as having been worn during the Civil War, nor have I established the military identity of Albert Stephens. Please review the photographs and make your own determination.
