Spectacular large druzy quartz epimorph over green fluorite from the Genoa Claim near Silverton, Colorado. This remarkable specimen features intricate, three-dimensional quartz formations with intricate cavities, geometric shapes and countless sparkling crystal faces.
An epimorph forms when one mineral grows over another, preserving the shape or impression of the original mineral. In this specimen, silica-rich hydrothermal fluids deposited quartz over preexisting fluorite, producing an intricate coating of tiny quartz crystals. The resulting druzy surface displays numerous sparkling crystal terminations, while the complex cavities and sculptural formations reflect the mineral’s unusual growth history.
