Middleton, E. C. Pair of framed Chromolithographic portraits. Cincinnati: E. C. Middleton, 1861–62. Two portraits, paper on canvas, oval image measures 13 x 16“; in original wood and plaster frame, each piece measures 18.5”x 21.5”including frame. Mid 19th century Chromolithographic portrait of George and Martha, Washington, both laid on canvas, in original frames. These frames and portraits have been gently restored, and the frame finishes has been done in a gilt cream.
Starting around 1861, his portraits often figures such as George and Martha, Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Daniel Webster, or General Grant were prize, not only just locally, but even drew the attention of East Coast markets and competitors, minor expert restoration to portraits and to original Frames. Very good condition.
Some of the photos were done in a bright light and will show the darker area on George Washington that goes above his head and to the side of his face, but it looks like a shadow. The original old wavy type glass has a minor scuff top right. Overtime the image lost all of its color and you will find they were mostly tan different shades of browns and black. These were enhanced with pastels to bring back the original color, but done very lightly.
Martha has some restoration done just above her head on the left side, slight cracks in the paper which were made less visible. Hanging on the wall, they look absolutely stunning. Unfortunately due to the glare of the glass it was difficult to take photos. One of the images was taken out of the frame to take photographs of the very important information along the bottom. The brown paper that was placed on the back was removed leaving some of it glued to the backing, but that can be easily removed.
A wonderful addition to your collection..
The frames will be packed professionally with several inches of foam board between the two piece pieces and surrounding in a large box.
Shipping is a flat fee of $75.
