ABOUT THIS SANTA
The sunset on the front of the robe is the slow part of the painting. The timber church has three golden onion domes topped with crosses. Snow lies on its roof, and light glows in the windows of the church and the cabin. The sky fades from orange to deep violet behind frosted pines. All of it is painted right onto the curved, carved surface. Turn him around and gold folds, rosettes with turquoise and white centers and a scalloped hem border cover the back. A tall arched collar rises behind his head with gold scrollwork along its edge. The staff lifts out, so you can set it aside when you pack him away. It ends in a red faceted tip painted with white petals. He makes an Orthodox Christmas gift for a family that celebrates in January. At 7 inches tall, he fits a bookshelf, a mantel or an entryway table. A church at sunset on a Santa who stays out well past December.
