Japanese army IJA soldier's / NCO's cotton field cap rare WWII:
$1085.00
The field cap succeeded the Type 45 cap in the late 1930s. These caps were issued by the army to Japanese soldiers and non-commissioned officers. This particular cap is a very rare variant made of cotton, unlike the common wool model. Very few examples of these cotton caps exist, and the existence of this variant is sometimes debated.According to Nick Komiya, who bases his opinion on the technical specifications of Japanese army field cap designs, a cotton version could have been produced under certain conditions:
-Production between April 1943 and December 1944-Front star in wool/felt or woven rayon (bevo) with a pentagonal base- Ventilation holes and a back drawstring with metal eyelets- Hemp lining with a deposit and inspection stamp.
This cap exhibits all these characteristics.
The Imperial Japanese Army star is woven onto a pentagonal rayon patch on the front. Two loops on each side of the cap allow for the attachment of a neck protector. The ventilation holes and the back drawstring are reinforced with aluminum eyelets. The chin strap is made of leather and fastens with two buttons. The interior is lined with hemp canvas and bears army stamps (depot and inspection). These stamps indicate a medium size (中) and a production date that is difficult to read but appears to be Showa 19 / 昭和十九 (1944).The internal head circumference is approximately 52-54 cm.
