A Nanotyrannus Tooth Fossil from the Hell Creek Formation of South Dakota. Nanotyrannus was a "dwarf" (though still giant by modern standards!) Tyrannosaur which made its way across the United States from the east coast to the area we now call the Rocky Mountains. Their classification as either a separate species or interpretation as juvenile Tyrannosaurus rex specimens was a topic of heated debate until late 2025, at which pointZanno & Napoli published a paper concluding that Nanotyrannus is not only a separate species, but in fact two species!
