Original 1917 World War I Poster Sugar Means Ships WWI Propaganda Ernest Fuhr:
$475.00
- Up for sale is a rare, guaranteed authentic original 1917 World War I homefront rationing poster titled "Sugar means Ships." [1]
- Published by the United States Food Administration and beautifully printed by The Carey Printing Company of New York, this iconic piece of American propaganda was designed to persuade domestic audiences to drastically curb their consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks. [1]
- Artistic Detail & Design:
- The artwork, illustrated by renowned artist Ernest Fuhr, features a striking political cartoon layout. A fashionable young woman sits drinking an iced beverage through a straw, entirely oblivious or uncaring that the suction of her drink is creating a whirlpool pulling transport ships away from the war front. In the distance, a soldier stands under heavy storm clouds labeled "War," signaling the desperate need for American vessels to carry soldiers and vital supplies. [1, 2, 3, 4]
- The text at the bottom delivers the stark data point: "The Consumption of Sugar Sweetened Drinks Must be Reduced. For your beverages 400 million lbs. of sugar were imported in ships last year. Every ship is needed to carry soldiers and supplies now."
- This 100-year-old poster is in excellent vintage condition. The colors remain remarkably sharp, and the text lines are beautifully dark and legible. It is currently flat-stored under clear protective wrap, shielding it from standard corner tearing and folding lines common with rolled military posters. There is a tiny inventory label sticker on the very outer upperer border margin of the wrapping/backer, not affecting the primary artwork area.
