DESCRIPTION:
A wonderful and rare vintage bar shot pourer advertising Macpherson’s “Cluny” Scotch Whisky — a fascinating piece of Scottish whisky and pub/bar memorabilia from a now largely forgotten but historically significant Scotch whisky brand.
ABOUT MACPHERSON’S CLUNY SCOTCH WHISKY
Whisky blender John E Macpherson & Sons was founded in 1857. The company’s main brand, Cluny Scotch Whisky, was named for the traditional title of the Chief of the Clan McPherson. In 1952, the company was acquired by Scottish and Newcastle Breweries Ltd. whisky
Cluny Scotch is described as a superior blend of the finest distilled Scotch whiskies aged in oak casks and specially selected for their superior quality and rich flavours. The wild cat, claws extended, is the totem of Clan Macpherson, with the motto meaning “do not touch an ungloved cat” — apt for the fearless clan. pricecutteronline
Cluny was a little-known brand in the UK but was immensely popular in the US. This relative rarity makes branded Cluny memorabilia genuinely hard to find and sought after by collectors of Scottish whisky and bar memorabilia worldwide. whisky
THE POURER
This attractive vintage bar shot pourer features:
- A distinctive white ceramic/plastic label plaque with bold red and black typography reading MACPHERSON’S “CLUNY” SCOTCH WHISKY — identical labelling on both sides making it visible from any angle behind a bar
- A metal spout mechanism — the classic twin-tube speed pourer design used in bars and hotels throughout the mid-20th century
- The pourer would have been inserted into the neck of a Cluny whisky bottle and used by bartenders to dispense measured shots quickly and efficiently
This type of branded speed pourer was a standard feature of Australian and British hotel bars from the 1950s through to the 1970s — when branded bar equipment was commonly supplied by spirit companies to publicans as part of their promotional and supply arrangements.
CONDITION
Good vintage condition — the ceramic/plastic label face is clean and legible with strong, clear typography on both sides. The metal components show some age-related patina consistent with age. Presumed functional but sold as a collectible display piece — functionality not guaranteed.
