Milt Jackson(1923–1999) was an American jazz vibraphonist and composer, best known as a founding member of the Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ). Renowned for his bluesy, expressive playing and masterful swing, Jackson helped elevate the vibraphone as a lead instrument in jazz. Born in Detroit, he began playing professionally in his teens and rose to prominence in the 1940s, performing with jazz greats like Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, and Thelonious Monk. In 1952, he co-founded the MJQ, blending jazz improvisation with classical influences and achieving both critical and commercial success. Jackson’s warm tone, impeccable timing, and soulful phrasing made him one of the most respected vibraphonists in jazz history. Outside the MJQ, he recorded extensively as a solo artist and sideman, working across bebop, blues, and ballads. His legacy endures as a pioneer who brought emotional depth and lyrical beauty to the vibraphone in modern jazz.
