This striking equestrian portrait, General George Washington Receiving a Salute on the Field of Trenton, was engraved by William Holl (1807–1871) after a painting by John Faed and published around 1860 by the Kendall Bank Note Company of New York. The scene depicts Washington passing through Trenton, New Jersey, during his journey north in 1775. Such travels often drew public admiration, with local dignitaries and citizens gathering to watch the revered general. Washington would return to Trenton in late 1776, where he led a pivotal victory in the Battle of Trenton. In this full-length engraving, Washington is shown confidently astride his horse, his cap raised in one hand and a saber extended in the other.
