This collectible item holds historical significance and represents a piece of transportation memorabilia from a unique era. Perfect for collectors of automobilia or military history enthusiasts, this license plate tag offers a glimpse into the past and serves as a tangible connection to the historical presence of US military forces in Japan. This is a vintage Japanese license plate issued specifically to U.S. military personnel serving in Okinawa under the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA).Plate Breakdown• 沖 (Oki): Short for Okinawa (沖縄). On older Japanese license plates, a single kanji character was used to represent the issuing office or region before transitioning to two-character names like 沖縄.
• 44: The vehicle classification code. A "4" or "40" series typically denotes small commercial vehicles or trucks, but on vintage military plates, it often designated small displacement engine vehicles or trucks.
• E: The SOFA designator character. While modern SOFA vehicles use Y (for standard cars) or A (for yellow-plate kei cars), older plates used letters like E, K, M, G, and H.
• Specifically, the letter "E" signified that the vehicle was imported into Japan under the SOFA agreement, and Japanese sales tax/import duty had not been paid. It is highly rare to see today as military commands discouraged members from shipping personal vehicles from the United States starting around the 1980s.
• • 1 01: The sequential registration number. The centered dot replacing the first digit indicates a leading zero, meaning the registration number is 01-01.This item is:Preowned, shows signs of normal wear.
