Real Photo Rare Early View of Powers, Michigan (Upper Peninsula). Postcard 1908:
$48.75
This postcard is a Real Photo Postcard (RPPC) depicting a street scene in Powers, Michigan, from 1908.
Because it is a genuine photograph (rather than a printed lithograph), it has significantly more appeal to local history collectors and Michigan ephemera enthusiasts.
1. Item Details
Location: Powers, Michigan (Menominee County, Upper Peninsula).
Type: Real Photo Postcard (RPPC). Note the handwritten-style caption "POWERS MICH. -'08- J-B~" on the front, which was typically scratched directly into the camera negative.
Postmark: * Front: A "ZACHOW, WIS" cancellation mark (March 2, 1908).
Back: A "POWERS, MICH" postmark dated February 29, 1908 (a Leap Year date).
Stamp: A 1-cent green Benjamin Franklin stamp (Series 1902).
Subject: A rare early view of downtown Powers, showing wooden storefronts, the "First National Hotel," and utility poles along a dirt road.
2. Condition Assessment
Based on the images, the card is in Very Good (VG) to Excellent (EX) condition for its age.
Pros: The image is sharp with good contrast. The corners are relatively square with only minor "bumping" (slight rounding). There are no obvious heavy creases or tears.
Cons: There is some minor "silvering" (a metallic sheen common in old photos) near the dark edges. There is a light circular impression on the front from the Zachow postmark on the back (known as a "postmark strike-through").
