Published in 1991, Rubber Blanket marked a pivotal turning point in Mazzucchelli's career. Having already transformed mainstream comics with Batman: Year One and Daredevil: Born Again, he stepped away from superhero work to pursue a far more personal and formally adventurous direction. The result was Rubber Blanket, an anthology that became one of the landmarks of alternative comics publishing in the 1990s.
This first issue features the acclaimed story "Near Miss," written and illustrated by Mazzucchelli, alongside artwork by Richmond Lewis. It showcases the restrained storytelling, expressive brushwork, and sophisticated visual design that would eventually culminate in Mazzucchelli's graphic novel masterpiece, Asterios Polyp.
