St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican—rome’s Greatest Church & Palaces Stereoview:
$34.00
We have climbed to the roof of a house facing the great square of St. Peter’s in Rome, and are looking directly west toward the pillared portico and lofty dome of the vast cathedral. So vast and so perfectly proportioned that we do not at first realize its enormous dimensions. The great façade is 363 feet high. From the pavement of the church to the summit of that lantern which we see on the top of the cross 435 feet — a height equal to that of the great pyramid of Egypt. The diameter of the dome is 138 feet. When the dome was constructed it was discovered that the huge arch was crushing itself under its own enormous weight, and in order to preserve it from destruction a huge band of steel was placed around the masonry above the drum on which the dome stands. This band may be seen from here. Scaffolding is always needed on that mountainous roof, and it costs about $5000 every five years to keep it in present condition.
Directly to the right is a part of the Vatican palace containing the personal apartments of the Pope. Here on this side of St. Peter’s, The Pope’s favorite sitting room is on the second floor from the top.
The tall building toward the left and in the shadow forms the west wing of the Court of Damascus and contains the Sistine Chapel. Between the building and the obelisk in the open square, the roof of the Loggia of Raphael may be seen. The roof of the Sistine Chapel is the place where the world-renowned fresco of the “Last Judgment” by Michelangelo is painted and is not visible from the point command seen.
The walls of the Vatican palaces have always been, and are still, covered with rare and costly frescoes. The garden of parade-grounds, the green foliage in the background, is the garden of the Vatican.*
