32nd division red arrow in ww1 and them Victory Medal with 4 claspsesA World War I Victory Medal with 4 clasps (bronze bars) belonging to a soldier from the 32nd "Red Arrow" Infantry Division is a remarkable and highly historic piece of military heritage.Because the 32nd Division was repeatedly used as a "shock division" thrown into the absolute heaviest fighting of the Western Front, its front-line soldiers frequently qualified for the standard set of 4 campaign/battle clasps.... Formed in July 1917, the division was composed of National Guard units from Wisconsin and Michigan.Over the course of the war, the 32nd Division earned an incredible combat record on the Western Front, cementing its place in military history through its distinct nickname and insignia. The Origin of "Red Arrow" and "Les Terribles"The division's famous identities were forged directly from its relentless performance in battle:• "Les Terribles" (The Terrible Ones): During brutal combat in France, the French Army bestowed this nickname upon the division to honor its extreme fortitude and ability to advance over terrain and fortifications that other units could not penetrate.• The Red Arrow Insignia: Officially adopted on November 11, 1918 (Armistice Day), the shoulder patch depicts a red arrow piercing a horizontal line. This combined two military map symbols: a horizontal line representing the enemy's front line, and an arrow indicating the axis of advance. Related Items:
