📌 DESCRIPTION
New Orleans military history meets Mardi Gras tradition in this oversized U.S. Navy Security Forces challenge coin from Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base (NAS JRB) New Orleans. Measuring approximately 3.5 inches, this substantial dual-sided coin combines Navy Security Department identity with the unmistakable imagery of Louisiana’s most celebrated city. Its elaborate artwork and unusually large diameter make it particularly appealing to collectors of Navy Master-at-Arms, military police, and installation-specific challenge coins.
The jester side delivers an exceptional amount of detail. A colorful Mardi Gras jester rides a unicycle while juggling Navy rank and rating insignia beneath an arc of military emblems. Surrounding the figure are a raised U.S. Navy Security Forces LA badge, a shield bearing a five-pointed star, and a repeating fleur-de-lis background. The combination of military insignia and playful Mardi Gras imagery creates a memorable tribute to the Navy Security Department and the local traditions surrounding its installation.
The reverse celebrates New Orleans through oversized, multicolored NOLA lettering, framed by raised banners reading “GREETINGS FROM” and “SECURITY DEPARTMENT.” Individual letters incorporate aviation imagery, a red-and-white structure marked New Orleans, the historic Belle Chasse Tunnel, a golden fleur-de-lis, and recognizable Louisiana cultural imagery. A winding waterway and green landscape complete the design. Particularly noteworthy is the depiction of the Belle Chasse Tunnel, a longtime regional landmark that permanently closed in December 2023.
The coin’s substantial diameter allows both sides to incorporate unusually detailed raised artwork without sacrificing the smaller insignia, architectural features, or lettering. The combination of military identity, regional landmarks, and Mardi Gras artwork gives this example appeal beyond traditional Navy challenge coin collecting.
