he Battle Path of a Unique Azov Regiment Flag

This flag is far more than a piece of cloth bearing the image of a soldier and the "Idea of the Nation" monogram. It is a living chronicle of struggle whose history began long before the full-scale invasion of 2022, as evidenced by the dates left by the soldiers. Handed down through brothers-in-arms, forged in marches and training, this flag later became a direct witness to the most heroic and tragic chapter of modern Ukrainian history—the defense of Mariupol.

Crucially, among the signatories on this flag are the heroic defenders of Mariupol themselves, who stood to the very end during the epic siege of the city and the Azovstal ironworks. Their signatures and drawings, rendered amidst heavy combat or in short pauses between bombardments, turn this flag into an invaluable historical artifact.

Although the aggressor state Russia designated "Azov" as a "terrorist organization" in an attempt to discredit the unit over its non-traditional and historical Ukrainian nationalist symbolism, Azov has always been, and remains, a legitimate, exemplary component of the Armed Forces and Defense Forces of Ukraine. To every Ukrainian, Azov stands as an enduring symbol of resilience, iron discipline, supreme military skill, and boundless love for the Motherland. Today, the spirit and ideology of the legendary regiment live on through the warriors of the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade (3rd SABr), who carry Azov in their hearts as they conduct high-intensity operations, including the "Vivid" operation near Lyman in the Donetsk region.

Detailed Analysis of Inscriptions, Signatures, and Drawings1. Left Section (Pre-2022 Period & Patriotic Verses)
  • Lines of the National Anthem of Ukraine: Hand-written in the top left corner is the complete first verse of the Anthem:

"Ukraine's glory has not yet perished, nor her freedom! / Once more upon us, brother Ukrainians, fate shall smile! / Our enemies shall vanish like dew in the sun, / And we too shall rule, brothers, in our own land."

Directly above it reads the inscription: "Tasha with Minister, Jan 16–17, 2021".

  • Pre-2022 Date: Below the anthem is one of the most valuable records confirming the flag's pre-invasion origin:

"P. Zaliznyak from the Kherson company, April 16, 2020".

  • Drawn Patch (Tryzub Shield): Below Zaliznyak’s note is a hand-drawn military shield patch depicting a red Trident against a green-and-yellow background.

  • Unit & Call Signs:

    • "2nd Assault Battalion, 'Trisha', 'Lom' from Oleksandriia" (signatures of brothers-in-arms from Oleksandriia serving in the 2nd Assault Battalion).

    • A blunt message of soldierly defiance against the enemy: "Katsaps are losers, you are f...ing done".

2. Right Section (Mariupol & Dedications)
  • Header & Motto: The top right features the large bold title "AZOV REGIMENT". Below it, written in red marker, is the core ideological foundation of the unit:

"Idea of the Nation — the code of Ukrainian identity", signed "Son of A. Moryak".

  • Gratitude & Slogans:

    • "THANK YOU TO AZOV FOR SERVING THE MOTHERLAND" written in prominent capital letters.

    • "GLORY TO UKRAINE" (duplicated in both green and red markers).

    • Signature of a comrade with the call sign "Moryak" (Sailor).

  • "MARIUPOL 2022" Marking: Prominently inscribed in large stylized lettering is "MARIUPOL 2022" accompanied by a soldier's personal signature—a direct tribute from the city's defenders.

3. Bottom Section: Allegorical Illustration of the Siege of Mariupol

The bottom right corner features a detailed, raw graphic illustration capturing the essence of Russian aggression:

  • The Enemy Tank: On the left, a Russian tank is drawn with the biting ironic label "RUSSIAN PEACE" on its side, with its main gun pointed directly at residential buildings.

  • The Devastated City: On the right are high-rise apartment buildings of Mariupol engulfed in flames, explosions, and smoke. Above the burning city, the artist wrote "Russkiy MIR" (Russian World), with "MARIUPOL" clearly labeled underneath.

This drawing artwork conveys what the "Russian world" actually brought to a peaceful Ukrainian city, and honors the ultimate sacrifice made by the defenders of Mariupol in holding back the invasion.
