VTG 1981 Chinese Calligraphy Art of Beekeeping Hand Painted Framed Original RARE:
$299.00
RARE VTG 1981 original Chinese calligraphy artwork featuring the characters 養蜂藝術, translating to “The Art of Beekeeping” or “Beekeeping is an Art.”
This one of a kind piece appears to be hand-brushed in black ink on traditional rice-paper/xuan-type calligraphy paper. The paper has visible natural wrinkles, rippling and creases, characteristic of this thin, absorbent style of calligraphy paper and its mounting/aging. These are visible beneath the glass and add to the handmade character of the piece.
The brushwork shows variations in stroke width, ink density and long tapered strokes consistent with hand-executed calligraphy rather than a conventional printed image.
An especially nice feature is the handwritten provenance attached to the original backing. Dated 1-14-81, the note identifies the meaning as “Keeping Bee is an Art” and states that it was:
“Given to me by Young Shin. Done by his father-in-law visiting the U.S.”
The artwork remains framed under glass in its older gold-tone wood frame, with the vintage backing and hanging wire intact. The frame shows expected age-related scuffs, scratches and finish wear. The calligraphy paper has the natural wrinkling/creasing noted above. Please see photographs for the complete condition.
A very unusual piece of Chinese calligraphy, Asian art and beekeeping history/decor with documented 1981 provenance still attached.
Original handwritten provenance will remain with the artwork.
