THE 1958 RECEIPT

One of the highlights of this group is the narrow yellow receipt dated 18 AUG 58. The printed amount fields appear to show $2.00 under “GROC” and $25.55 under “SPEC,” with a handwritten “seed wheat” notation beside the special-charge amount. The printed total is $27.55.

This is an especially appealing detail for collectors interested in agricultural history, rural commerce, and the relationship between local general stores and farming communities in southern Minnesota.

THE ACCOUNT SLIPS

The lot also includes larger, red-printed Butternut Store account forms with handwritten entries, customer information, transaction notations, and numbered ledger lines. One form includes the heading “Eggs @,” suggesting that egg transactions were recorded as part of the store’s customer accounting system.

The reverse of one form features a period advertising message:

“LIKE ALL OTHER PEOPLE — We are liable to make mistakes — BUT — we are always glad to cheerfully rectify the same if possible.”

It continues with “You Will Profit by Trading Here” and “Thank You For Your Patronage.”

The form is identified as manufactured by the McCaskey Register Company of Alliance, Ohio, providing an additional connection to the history of commercial bookkeeping and store-account systems.

CONDITION

These are original vintage paper documents with age-appropriate wear. Expect yellowing and darkening, softened and worn edges, creases, handling marks, fading, and handwritten pencil or ink entries. Some handwriting is difficult to decipher due to age and fading. The yellow receipt has folds and visible staple holes or fastening marks.

Please review all photographs carefully, as they are an important part of the description and show the actual items included in this lot.

A NOTE ABOUT AUTHENTICITY AND DATING

These pieces are being offered as vintage historical ephemera based on their printed business information, paper characteristics, and visible dates. The August 18, 1958 date is clearly legible on the yellow receipt. The other handwritten dates are less clear and should be interpreted with that limitation in mind.

COLLECTOR APPEAL

A distinctive piece of Lake Crystal, Minnesota, history documenting a local general store, its customers, and its accounting practices during the mid-20th century. Ideal for a collection of Minnesota memorabilia, local history archives, antique store displays, agricultural history collections, or vintage paper and advertising ephemera.

You will receive the original paper items shown in the photographs. No reproductions or modern copies are intended.
