Vintage Rare 1963 Press Photo Of Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space.
Twenty-six-year-old Soviet textile worker Valentina Tereshkova became the first woman to orbit in outer space, logging 48 orbits and flying more than all U.S. astronauts combined at the time during her historic June 1963 flight.
Background: She was an amateur parachute jumper and factory worker with no prior technical background before training as a cosmonaut.
The Mission: Her call sign/nickname for the flight was "Seagull" (or Chaika), and she orbited alongside fellow traveler Lt. Col. Valery Bykovsky.
Aftermath: She completed the historic mission successfully, enduring rigorous pre-flight physical and dizziness tests, and later appeared in Moscow's Red Square prior to launch.
