Beautiful Vintage Mid-Century Hakata Urasaki Japanese Clay Figurine – Traditional Craftsman / Barrel Maker
Up for sale or buy-it-now is this stunning, highly detailed Hakata doll (Hakata ningyo) depicting a traditional Japanese artisan or cooper hard at work making a wooden barrel. These heavy, hand-painted bisque clay figurines were highly popular souvenirs brought back by US servicemen stationed in Japan during the 1950s post-war era.
The figure features an incredibly expressive, realistic face, a traditional hachimaki (headband), and a deep blue happi coat with a prominent "新" (Shin - meaning "New" or "Fresh") crest stylized inside a white circle on the back.
Measurements:
• Height: Approximately 6.5 to 7 inches tall (measured against the ruler in photos).
• Base Width: Approximately 6 inches wide.
Condition Report:
This item is in good vintage condition for its age but shows minor wear typical of mid-century unglazed clay:
• Paint Wear: There are notable scuffs and paint loss on the craftsman's right knee exposing the white clay underneath (see closeup photos).
• Surface Dust: Minor dust build-up in the crevice details from display over the decades.
• Structure: No major structural cracks, breaks, or repairs observed. The mallet and tool remain intact. The bottom base is solid with a typical firing hole and no maker's stamps (common for some variations of these hand-crafted pieces).
