About Artist Val Mayerik
Val Mayerik is an American comic book artist best known for his work with Marvel Comics during the 1970s, including his contributions to fantasy, horror, and adventure titles that have become highly collectible among comic fans.
Early in his career, Mayerik worked as an assistant to comic artist Dan Adkins, alongside P. Craig Russell. He soon began receiving professional assignments from Marvel, contributing pencil art to titles such as Conan the Barbarian, Chamber of Chills, Supernatural Thrillers, and Creatures on the Loose.
Marvel Comics and Howard the Duck
Mayerik became closely associated with Marvel’s Man-Thing feature, where his artwork helped define the eerie, atmospheric tone of the series. With writer Steve Gerber, he was involved in the first appearance of Howard the Duck, a character who later became a cult favorite and a recognizable figure in Marvel history.
Throughout the 1970s, Mayerik continued to work on a wide range of Marvel titles, including Man-Thing, Thongor, The Living Mummy, The Frankenstein Monster, Ka-Zar, and Marvel Preview. His style was especially well suited to sword-and-sorcery, horror, supernatural, and fantasy material.
For collectors, Mayerik’s name is most often associated with Bronze Age Marvel storytelling, particularly issues connected to Man-Thing and Howard the Duck.
Beyond Marvel
After his early Marvel work, Mayerik expanded into additional comic and illustration projects. He worked with a number of publishers and creative studios, and his art appeared in comic magazines, independent titles, and specialty publications beyond the mainstream superhero field.
His later credits include work connected to Heavy Metal, Warren Publishing, American Splendor, and Magic: The Gathering-related comic projects. He also developed a career in commercial illustration, storyboards, advertising art, and game-related artwork.
