Persian turquoise is a beautiful, high-quality MiddleEastern stone that is typically free of matrix. When the market for itcollapsed in the Middle East, Arab traders bought the stones at distressedprices and brought them to artisans in the American Southwest.
A Brief Place in Southwestern JewelryNative American artisans initially resisted the Persianstones because they prized the rich matrix found in turquoise from Americanmines. Faced with large unsold inventories, traders lowered their prices untilthe stones became attractive to craftspeople. For a brief period, exceptionallyfine Persian turquoise appeared in Native American jewelry.
My CollectionWhen I discovered these pieces,I bought as many as I could afford. Over the years, I sold or traded many ofthem, but recently found a small group I had kept. This is one of those pieces, featuring that lovely Persian turquoise.
