Collector's NoteAzulejos are one of Portugal's most recognizable decorative traditions. Ceramic tiles have been used for centuries throughout Portugal for architectural decoration as well as historical and religious imagery, with cobalt blue and white becoming especially associated with traditional Portuguese tilework.
This panel depicts one of the most important events in modern Portuguese Catholic history. The 1917 apparitions at Fátima were reported by the three shepherd children Lúcia dos Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto, who described seeing the Virgin Mary near a holm oak at Cova da Iria.
The inclusion of the three children, their sheep, the holm-oak tree, Our Lady of Fátima, and the famous Fátima sanctuary architecture creates a particularly complete narrative scene rather than a simple portrait of the Virgin.
Its combination of Portuguese azulejo tradition, Marian devotional imagery, cobalt-blue Baroque-inspired border, detailed Fátima landscape, and permanently mounted presentation gives the piece crossover appeal to collectors of Catholic religious art, Marian memorabilia, Portuguese ceramics, European folk art, and Fátima pilgrimage souvenirs.
