Uniform Style & Context

These buttons belonged to the official passenger servicedress uniforms of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (AT&SF).They were worn by frontline, customer-facing personnel who operated the line'sfamous luxury passenger trains (such as the Super Chief or El Capitan).

Depending on rank, they were designated for specific uniformtypes:

The 1-Inch Buttons: Fastened the main front closure of a heavy winter wool or lighter-weight summer serge Conductor or Trainman frock coat.
The 5/8-Inch Buttons: Placed vertically down the front of the matching uniform vest, or sewn onto the jacket sleeve cuffs.
The Silver-Tone/Chrome Finish: Santa Fe typically utilized silver-tone hardware for Trainmen, Brakemen, and Baggagemen, whereas gold-tone/brass configurations were often reserved for the highest-ranking Conductors. The backmarks bridge two different eras--these buttons trace a long service history or were assembled as replacements over a railwayman's career.
