This handmade, traditional style Thunderbird Necklace, originated in the Kewa Pueblo, Santo Domingo, New Mexico. Each piece from that area is unique in its craftsmanship. This necklace has been a family heirloom for approximately 75 years. It has four tabs strung on one side of the bird and three on the other. Reason for the odd number could not be determined. The Thunderbird and the tabs contain turquoise and other stones found in New Mexico. It’s held together by the original dual strings the craftsperson used instead of a clasp. Bird dimensions are 2 inches by 2.25 inches. Tabs are 1.25 inch. The piece is approximately 0.25 inch thick. This will be a great addition to any jewelry collection. (FA=folk art)
