Vintage Western Electric Model 160-AR Selector Set (Ringer Box):
$135.00
This is a vintage Western Electric Model 160-AR Selector Set, a specialized piece of communication hardware used in railroad train dispatching systems from the early to mid-20th century. In early railroad operations, multiple remote stations along a track shared a single telegraph or telephone wire line. To call a specific station without ringing every telephone on the line, a central train dispatcher used a master key system to send a unique rhythmic sequence of electrical pulses down the wire.- The Glass-Enclosed Mechanism: The intricate mechanism sitting at the bottom of the open box is a specialized step-by-step selector (the brass wheel visible under the glass dome). It was engineered to advance only when it received the specific number of pulsed electrical signals designated for that exact station.
