TheBritish War Medal is a campaign medal of the United Kingdom which was awardedto officers and men and women of British and Imperial forces for service in theFirst World War. Two versions of the medal were produced. About 6.5 millionwere struck in silver and 110,000 in bronze, the latter awarded to, amongothers, the Chinese, Maltese and Indian Labour Corps. 2) Victory Medal. Attributed / Namedto LIEUT C. WILLIAMS. - Lt. Cyril Williams of the Royal Flying Corps 60thSquadron and is listed as KIA on July 30th, 1916. The award of a common alliedcampaign medal was recommended by an inter-allied committee in March 1919. Each allied nation would design a 'Victory Medal' for award to their ownnationals, all issues having certain common features, including a winged figureof victory on the obverse and the same ribbon. Fourteen countries finallyawarded the medal. No. 60 Squadron of the Royal Air Force was formed in 1916 atGosport. It is currently part of No. 1 Flying Training School based at RAFShawbury in Shropshire flying the Airbus H135 Juno HT.1. The squadron badge is a markhor's head andwas approved by King George VI in December 1937. Chosen to commemorate many yearsof service in North-West India, the markhor being a mountain goat frequentingthe Khyber Pass. The horns of a markhor were presented to the squadron in 1964.The squadron motto is Per ardua ad aethera tendo – 'I strive throughdifficulties to the sky', Conditionas Photographed with wear and age as seen (please see photos for condition).
