The Lincoln Forty-second Street Corporation was the original corporate entity formed to construct and own the Lincoln Building, a prominent 53-story Neo-Gothic skyscraper located at 60 East 42nd Street in Midtown Manhattan, New York City (opposite Grand Central Terminal).
Key Historical Details:
- The Skyscraper: Designed by architect James Edwin Ruthven Carpenter Jr. (with Kenneth Norton) and completed in 1930, the 673-foot tower was built to house offices, the Lincoln Storage Company, and the Lincoln National Bank.
- Financial Distress & Foreclosure: During the Great Depression, the corporation suffered financial difficulties and defaulted on its first-mortgage 5½% sinking fund bonds. In 1932–1933, the property entered receivership and foreclosure proceedings led by the Chase National Bank as trustee.
- Reorganization: The property was sold at sale, and the company was subsequently reorganized in 1933 as the Lincoln Building Corporation.
- Later Names: The landmark tower was later renamed One Grand Central Place in 2009 and is currently owned and managed by the Empire State Realty Trust.
